SIXTEEN

MASON

I groan as I struggle to open my grainy, tired eyes against the sunlight glaring unfiltered into the room. Since I’ve taken to waking up at the crack of dawn worrying about everyone, I haven’t bothered to close the blinds here. This morning, though, I finally managed to sleep in.

I blame Quinn, who woke me up in the middle of the night for a second round of hot-as-fuck sex that seemed to go on forever. I don’t regret a second of it, but I’m tired as hell as a result.

The bed is already empty beside me. I’m not surprised, considering Quinn’s been sleeping worse than me since the explosion.

Someone bangs unnecessarily loud and long on my door. I don’t need x-ray vision to see my twin standing on the other side with an annoying-as-fuck grin on his goofy face. “You two ready for breakfast?” Ian’s muffled voice asks through the door, and I roll my eyes.

So much for taking my time getting out of bed. I throw the comforter off of me and grab fresh boxers. I yank them on before I reach the door, pulling it open to offer my brother an unimpressed look. He smirks in response and pushes his hair out of his face.

“Quinn is already up and out.” I offer with a shrug. “Give me five, and I’ll be ready.”

He puts both thumbs up and disappears, wandering down the hall casually. For about the eight-thousandth time in my life, I feel a pang of jealousy for the easy way Ian accepts things and keeps moving, not taking the time to stress over every fucking detail of what’s happening with the people around him. A moment later, I hear him banging recklessly on someone else’s door. I guess I’m not the only one taking my sweet time starting the day.

I roll my shoulders, wincing at the deep ache in my muscles. Between Sailor showing back up, figuring out that we have to deal with Caras sooner than expected, the hours spent in the training yard, and then my sessions with Quinn… Yesterday sure as hell took its toll. My mind wanders, thinking back to the moment Sailor and I made eye contact as I was leaving the sparring ring.

Levi said he could see me being the fighter in The Club’s Million Dollar match. Sailor didn’t agree. And I don’t begrudge him that—I’m not a natural fighter. I’ll protect what I love, but beyond that, I can merely hold my own. I’ll never be the type to dominate someone in a fight, not like Willem did when his wolf was provoked. Speaking of which…

How you feeling this morning? I mind link Willem.

It takes a second before I get his short response. I’m fine.

Cool. I wince. I’ll sound like an asshole if I tell Willem that I think he should refuse to take the fight. Yeah, he unleashed hell on Sailor when provoked, but that’s not a guarantee. And the way Quinn looked when she opened the door to my room last night? Distinctly not okay.
