Chapter Nine

Annie had always liked Penny Revlin. After all the years away from home, it was easy to forget her favorite parts of being here. Meals were one of them. It’d been ages since she’d sat around a table surrounded by people she’d known her whole life. Lots of laughter was washed down with good food. Even though sandwiches were placed on the table, Annie knew they’d be excellent. Penny Revlin didn’t just make sandwiches.

She made sandwiches.

Toasted sandwiches on sub bread. Potato salad. Lemonade that Annie would guarantee was homemade. A tray of pickles and veggies with dip. Another bowl with grapes. The kids ran to the table as soon as she gave the word.

She handed Annie a bottle of soap. “You and Cade try washing up with the water hose enough to get your hands clean.”

Annie happily took the bottle. “Thank you.”

Cade had the water aimed at his windshield. He flashed the hose at her as she walked closer. The spray touched the grass just before her feet and she gave him her best look. “Don’t even think about that.”

“But I already have.” His grin was broad and boyish and she wanted to get her arms around him. Especially get her fingers in his hair that was left wild by the wind and water. It might be a mistake tomorrow or when it was time to leave, but thank God, she’d listened to Cade and gotten in that truck with him.

She sighed. “Lunch is ready and your mom said to wash up.”

He aimed the hose at the front of his Jeep and lowered it. “That’ll do her good enough. Let me wind the hose up a little.”

She waited by the spigot as he made a neat circle with the hose until the end with the sprayer was waiting to be dropped on top. They washed and he draped his arm across her shoulders as they walked to the table. Just across her like that always happened.

Guys had put their arms around her, but she’d always felt more resting post and less of a girlfriend. Cade’s arm went around her and didn’t really hang so much as held. He pulled her in and made all her endorphins wake up and shoot sparks of happy sighs. She put her head against him to see what it would feel like. Amazing. Simply amazing. So much so that she let her head rest right there against him while they walked the too-short length to the table. He rested his hand at her lower back, keeping it all gentlemanly since he was sitting down with his family.

Sandwiches were passed around and his mom used tongs to fill the kids’ plates. “I hear you’re working in your grandpa’s bakery?”

Annie nodded and filled her plate. “Yes, ma’am. I came in to do cupcakes for the school.”

Katie perked up and her already big blue eyes widened. “Cupcakes?”

She nodded at the little girl. “That’s right.”

Cade’s arm went back around her in a possessive hold that she was eating up like her favorite cake.
