Chapter Fifteen

Devlon sat across from Poppy in a booth in the newest restaurant in Knotty—The Blue Ruin, a prohibition-era term for bathtub gin. The establishment was a speakeasy in the basement of Think Tank Innovations. To get a reservation, you had to call ahead and know the secret password. A word that changed weekly. Tonight’s was blind pig.

Poppy had gone all in and worn a black flapper dress, black hose with a stripe up the back of her legs and Victorian leather black boots. Instead of her normal witch’s hat, she wore a slim headband with a tiny witch’s hat attached that had a feather in the side of it. With her straight jet-black hair already cut in a bob and bright red lipstick, she looked every bit the part of a sexy someone from that era.

He too had gotten into the fun of the place and wore a pinstripe suit and white fedora with a four-inch black band around the base, all on loan from the owner of Windy Manor. She had a room full of clothing from throughout the ages for her guests to rent.

In the corner of the room, a piano player entertained and enticed couples to make their way to the dance floor. The musician looked to be somewhere around the same age as Ruby Rae and Sara Ann. The gentleman would be a hot commodity among the ladies of Knotty’s 21 Club.

A waitress stopped at their table and dropped cocktail napkins in front of them. “What will you have?” She spoke in a faux noir tone. Like the smart-mouthed, gum-chewing, cigarette-selling babes from back in the era who were being questioned about a possible speakeasy going on in the basement.

“I’ll have a sidecar,” Poppy replied.

“A highball for me,” he added.

“Got it, doll face.” The waitress sat a tray of finger foods in front of them. “I’ll be right back with your drinks.”

“I was reading today,” Poppy said to Devlon, “and did you know finger foods became a thing during prohibition? The owners started serving them as a way of keeping their clientele sober longer so they’d drink more.”

It was probably best she threw out their first topic of conversation, because if it had been left up to him, it would have been about their kiss. A kiss that had tormented his thoughts ever since it had happened. Which he wasn’t complaining about because it was a hell of a lot more fun to think about than his deal with the devil. “I didn’t know that. What else did your research tell you?”

“That Ipswhich hosiery is a company that made stockings. During Halloween season, they would advertise their product to young women who loved dressing up and attending parties. It was Ipswhich’s advertising that popularized the Sexy Halloween Witch image that is still popular today.”

He meant to wiggle his eyebrows at her, but instead gave her the smooth devil grin that always caught the attention of the female population. “There’s something sexy about a woman who does her research about a place before going there on a date.
