The rest of the week went by with relatively no mishaps, mostly because Ronan was home with Isa. She had a feeling whatever happened that day in the bathroom would never truly be unraveled. Whoever wanted to harm her brother had done an impeccable job of covering their tracks. She’d also had second thoughts about allowing her brother to go to the All Hallows Eve festivities for the simple fact he was still injured. However, she had given him her word, and she would be there along with Ethan and Mads.

As for the diary, she put it aside. The last entry she read left her with more questions and sometimes, the answers to those questions were worse than not knowing. Yet, she searched out the book, just to learn more about her mother’s state of mind around the time of their accident. She seemed so happy, but the entry on the seventeenth appeared different—nothing like her mother. She’d been scared. Almost harried. It made little sense.

“Thought you weren’t going to look at that?” Ronan said, joining her in the living room.

Isa frowned. She wasn’t going to. She’d decided to leave the situation alone until everything settled, but it was the anniversary of her parents’ death, so... “I know. It’s just...”

“Today.” Ronan wrapped his arm around her after sitting beside her. “I’m such an idiot for not going with you to see them. I should have been going all along.”

She frowned. “It’s hard for both of us. Look at me, I go two weeks before the anniversary, because I can’t force myself to step foot into that cemetery on the anniversary.”

“So, what are you reading tonight?” He tapped the edge of the diary with his finger, changing the subject. She stared into his amber eyes. The depth of his understanding shocked her. Obviously, she knew part of the reason he acted out was because of their parents’ death. He pushed people away. He also did stupid shit for attention—good or bad never mattered. Yet, he had a brilliant mind and could be something special if he focused his attention.

“I’m trying to figure out what was going on between mom and dad and Keres' parents,” she said. “I think there’s another book because this doesn’t go back far enough.”

The furrow between her brother’s brows deepened. “I know we’ve talked about this before, but do you believe the rumors around town?” Ronan glanced up at her. “You know, like our parents were swingers or part of some sex cult or something?”

Isa snickered, shaking her head. “Those are absurd. Mom and dad part of a sex cult?” She frowned at the thought, even though they acted bizarre sometimes. Of course, she’d heard the same sentiments over the years, never truly knowing who said it or why. But her parents weren’t like that. Nor, did she suspect, were Keres’. “No. I don’t even think they’d cheat on each other, even if they had an open marriage.”

“So, why would someone be upset mom was pregnant?” Ronan quirked his brow.
