It was Memorial Day and it was the actual date of Desiree’s and Damien’s anniversary. Everyone was enjoying themselves except Desiree. It seemed like the more people approached her with concern, the sadder she got.

Rayven finally joined the others outside by the poolside. She sat down at the bench table with Desiree. She placed a label-less prescription bottle in front of Desiree.

Desiree looked at the bottle, and then into Rayven’s distressed eyes and asked, “What’s this?”

“It’s doxycycline. But Sean thinks he slick by ripping the label off.”

“Where did you find that at?”

“It was in his stuff,” Rayven answered. “And even though there’s no label his dumb ass doesn’t realize that pills have inscriptions on them that you can look up.”

“Did you ask him about them?”

“No,” Rayven mumbled angrily. She stared out at the others, including her husband having fun. He was being extra touchy with Jah’s friend Nivea in the pool. Rayven looked over by the grill where Jah was talking to Damien and Rock.

“All he’s gonna do is deny it,” Rayven said. She let out a frustrated breath. “I’m getting tired of this trust thing with Sean. He’s draining. I thought we could get close on this lil’ getaway but he hasn’t been intimate with me at all. Then I find these pills and I think I have the answer.”

Desiree leaned in closer to whisper, “You think he got something?”

“People use doxycycline for Chlamydia. I know because I got my own bottle,” Rayven said with despair.

“Oh, I’m so sorry for you, Ray,” Desiree said sympathetically. “What are you gonna do?”

Tears welled up in Rayven’s eyelids. She shrugged, “I don’t know.”

“If he’s cheating on you again Ray then maybe you should considered going through with the separation.”

“I don’t wanna lose my husband to all these hoes and bitches that he’s messing around with,” Rayven said as her voice cracked.

Trying to remain understanding, Desiree said, “I totally get that. But trying to hold on to Sean may mean compromising your own happiness. Will he ever stop?”

“He will and he can,” Rayven said defensively. She cocked her head to the side as she questioned Desiree. “So, you don’t believe in me and Sean’s marriage anymore?”

Desiree shook her head. “It’s not that. Sean has been caught so many times by you and those are the situations you want me to know about. I’m sure you’ve been dealing with this for some time now.”

“But don’t judge us, Dez. You of all people,” Rayven said. She grabbed the pill bottle and stood up to leave. Before walking away, she said to Desiree, “When do you plan to tell Damien that you can’t have babies because you used to use abortions as a form of birth control?”

Desiree’s mouth hung open with shock. Rayven’s words cut her deep. When confiding in Rayven, Desiree never expected for her best friend to hurt her with it. “Really, Rayven?”

Rayven tossed her hair over her shoulders and stormed back inside the cabin.

Hurt couldn’t even describe how Desiree felt. Blinking back the tears, Desiree got up and went to walk around the front of the house.
