I shoot up off the bed the minute the door swings open. It’s not fear, though.

I feel Jesse arrive. I felt his presence before the door even started to open.

“Oh, thank goodness!” I exhale. “You were gone for so long! I thought something might have happened.”

“Don’t be silly, Princess.” He gives me a taut smile. “What could possibly have happened?”

“Where would you like me to start?” I raise an eyebrow.

“Very funny. Where’s the big oaf?” He glances around the spacious suite. Like the rest of the place, it looks like a brothel. Not that I would know from experience. But with the gold-framed nudes on the walls, the OTT four-poster bed, and the dimpled velvet ottoman in the center of the room, I’m fairly sure that it’s not far off.

“If you’re referring to Thorston, he decided to go out and ‘check the perimeter’ or something.” I roll my eyes. “He made me promise not to step out of the room.”

“I’m guessing you didn’t try, or you’d have bumped straight into the big-ass sentries at the door.”

I wrinkle my nose. “Actually, I didn’t even check. I’ve had more than my share of run-ins with vampires for one lifetime.”

“And yet here you are, back in their lair,” Jesse says. I’d make a face at him, but he’s turned away, heading toward one of the tall windows. “Exactly what perimeter was he checking?” It’s still dark, but I know what he’s looking at out there. Demons can see perfectly well in diminished light. He’ll see that the sprawling chateau is surrounded by gardens that would make Versailles look pitiful. There are scores of guards patrolling at every point. Seems like Jesse’s buddy ‘Bob’ is more than a little paranoid. Guess I can’t blame him after what he went through.

“Beats me,” I say. “I think we’re pretty secure here. The place even has a moat!”

Jesse stifles a small snorting sound.

“Moat? Princess, that’s the Seine.”

Of course, it is! My bad!

I shrug, “How should I know that? I can’t help that I’ve never left the States. I mean, apart from…well, those other dimensions you keep dragging me off to. And then that other time in Paris…and…”

“Yep. We’ll always have Paris,” Jesse says with a faint smile. He turns back to the window, not continuing his teasing. There’s something bugging him. I’m sure of it.

“Anyhow, I think he was more interested in what lies beneath us.” I feel a cold finger run down my spine as I say it. Our arrival had been accompanied by a brief tour, during which our host explained that the chateau is hundreds of years old. And positioned right at one of the access points to some kind of underground burial site.

“The Catacombs.” Jesse nods. “I’m not surprised that would draw him.” He’s facing out the window, his hands clasped behind his back. I walk up to stand beside him.

“I guess…” I say. Personally, I can’t imagine why anyone would be drawn to centuries of old bones. I rub my hands up and down my upper arms, though the air is warm about us.
