Chapter 13

She quickly walked outside. Sidney wasn’t working today. She waved at the guard on duty and headed down the street. She didn’t even want her daily latte right now. She walked for a few blocks and found herself at the park on 14th and K. She sat down on a bench in the shade. She didn’t know what to do. Should she look for a new job? She felt confident that she could find one, even in this current economic climate, but she didn’t want to leave Novotny-Wayne. Especially since she knew in her heart of hearts that she’d been doing a great job and that she was good at what she did.

“I’m not going to let her chase me away,” she told herself.

Leslie took out her phone and called Selena. If anyone knew how to deal with drama on the job it was Selena, one of the biggest drama queens Leslie knew and someone who had gotten into more than one tiff with a cameraman, producer or editor. The phone didn’t ring one full time before Selena picked up. “Hey, I’m out on a story,” she said before Leslie could say hello. “I’ll call you when I get off the air.” Selena hung up before Leslie could say another word. She loved Selena, but sometimes she really rubbed Leslie the wrong way. She hit the speed dial button for Katrina.

“Hi Leslie, is everything okay?” Katrina asked.

“No,” Leslie’s voiced cracked. She told Katrina everything that had been happening at work. “That’s ridiculous,” Katrina told her as she wound down. “Your boss is a piece of work. You need to document everything she does because she’s trying to make you out to be incompetent so she can fire you.”

“That’s what my mom said. I’ve never experienced anything like this before its kind of unreal.”

“I know, honey.” Katrina told her. “But you’ve got to be strong. Are you outside? I hear a lot of traffic.”

“Yeah, I’m in the park.”

“Okay, you’ve got to pull yourself together and get back in the office. You can’t let your boss chase you away and make you out to look incompetent. That’s a bunch of shit. So go back to work and finish out the day and I’ll meet you at Command at 6.”

“Thanks, Katrina. You’re the best. Drinks are on me.” Leslie clicked off and walked back to the office.
