What were you working on while you were at the London School?

I didn’t follow a regular plan of studies, since I already had my French diploma. I decided to study for my own account — in particular, a special problem of recent French economic history: the economic reform of 1925–26 and the history of the “franc Poincaré.” At the time, this was an important topic for the French, and since I had lived in France and was convinced I would return there, I decided to study some problems of recent French economic history. I started a research project in this field under the supervision of Professor Barrett Whale, a fine teacher in international economics at the London School. This was in effect the project I developed later in my dissertation in Trieste.
