Taking time to think

Despite the fact that few will argue against the need to allow time to think, there are barriers to the exercise of this basic requirement over which we have little control, like conservative disciplinary traditions and attitudes to research practices – not to mention bureaucratic concerns to do with funding and restrictive time frames which may constrain critical and creative development. Working within this environment can certainly be problematic for both researchers and students at all levels, but this particular book is not the place for elaborating on possible tactics and approaches for dealing with institutional quandaries and complications. Instead we’ll maintain our focus on ways of contending with the last problem, that of time-poverty which comes about due to the need to spend time on everyday non-academic responsibilities, and the price we pay for the perceived advantages of 24/7 connectivity.

Do you think you are time poor? If so, to what degree? The grid below is one I’ve suggested for coursework postgraduates. You might tailor it to suit yourselves. For example, some academics might add an ‘overweening admin’ column. But be honest with yourself about how you spend your time. Perhaps there are areas to which you might allocate more attention, and others less?
