Third and finally, the language itself needs to be both scrutinized and appropriated. Kubota (2004, p. 46) draws on two prominent critical applied linguists, Pennycook (1994) and Canagarajah (1999). The former suggests that within critical pedagogy, we should teach the standard language, but do so in a critical way, noting its involvement with “domination and subordination,” rather than taking it as truly normative. We should not avoid standard English, as this can lead to “marginalization or ghettoization’ (says Canagarajan, 1999, p. 176) but critically negotiate its use.

Anti-racist education is intended for all groups in a society, to foster understanding, and to encourage accepting attitudes and behaviors. Clearly this is a very broad area of increasing importance, in which much work remains to be done; indeed, for language teachers an area whose surface as only just been scratched.
