“I don’t understand.” Crevven looked over at me, waiting for me to explain further. This wasn’t an easy conversation. With shifters who had grown up normally, this was a conversation that happened when they hit puberty, so they would be prepared when they turned eighteen and their bodies changed once again. For Crevven, there were so many lies to sift through. We had to tread carefully, but I also refused to beat around the bush and have him misunderstand.

“I know. We will answer any questions you have, but would you like Bruin to go through the basics first? Ask for any clarifications, interrupt as much as you need, okay?” He gave a thumbs-up on the table, bringing back a flash of memory from when we had found him.

“Bruin?” He was much better at this part than I was. He was softer, gentler where I would bulldoze through, throwing fact after fact without pause. I knew better, and I tried to do better, but when in certain situations, the nerves got the better of me. Within my role as pack Alpha, they weren’t present, not in a way that caused my thoughts or emotions to falter, but I knew the issue would arise again with Crevven, and although I would work on it, now was not the time to test it.

“Basics, right. Crevven.” He waited until our mate’s emerald eyes met his. “From what I have gathered, your pack taught that heats simply came about when each shifter turned eighteen.” He nodded. “And when that didn’t happen, the shifter was shunned.” Another nod. “That’s not how heats work, okay? They are possible once an Omega turns eighteen, but they won’t go into a heat unless their mates are near them. So everyone in your pack that did go into a heat, well, at least one of their mates was there.” Crevven sat motionless as Bruin went on with his explanation. “Once we got ahold of you, the cycle started. Each Omega is different, so your heat could come tomorrow or next week for all we know. Once a couple have happened, we will be able to track it a bit more, but there are signs…”

“The scratching?”

“Yes.”

“And the anxiety?”

“Mhm. They are signs of irritation from us being away from you. You scratch because your skin is irritated at the clothing that’s touching you; it would rather have our skin to rub against. The anxiety comes from you wanting us close in case you go into heat. It’ll become stronger and stronger until it arrives.”

Crevven grimaced. “I can’t believe they didn’t tell us any of this.”

“Agreed. It’s one thing to lie about how heats happen, but they expected you to go into them, so getting you ready for what’s to come seems obvious.” I tried to hold back the anger at how horrible that pack was. If I had any say in it, they would be eviscerated.

“I don’t understand why they would do that…”

“To keep you in the dark and dependent on them for information and guidance, although they withheld those to a point.
