Once I’d gotten VJ settled in his seat, I returned to the comfort of my recliner, scooped up the TV remote, and flipped through the channels. I didn’t even think about sleeping the remainder of our flight. Between standing guard over VJ to make sure he didn’t get us into trouble, and my reoccurring nightmare of sharks, I remained adamant about not wanting to sleep.

Thoughts of seeing William in a few short hours made it almost impossible to sit still. My emotions teetered between excitement and dread. I had no idea what I would find when we got off the plane. I wasn’t even sure William wanted to see me anymore.

It had been months since I’d tricked them all into leaving the Prague castle without me. William probably thought I didn’t love him and had sent him away. I felt sure Mary and the chief blamed me for James’ death, and I couldn’t blame them if they did. It was all my fault he’d gotten killed. If I had planned better, hadn’t sent them to the castle without first knowing what they were walking into, James would still be alive. My eyes blurred and my heart ached deep inside as I began to have second thoughts about going to Alaska.

I stopped changing channels when a news alert flashed across the screen about a plane crashing into the ocean. When I saw the flight number I shot forward, scooting closer to the screen, and shoved the headphones on.

At the ticket counter, we’d wanted the earlier of the two flights, but we’d missed the boarding cut off and had to wait an extra hour for the next flight.

My throat tightened when a huge knot formed in the pit of my stomach. Laszlo must have found out we’d left, and somehow caused the plane to crash in the water. The plane he thought we were on.
