The dagger seemed satisfied at our hike into the forest because it was dormant the rest of the day. There had to be somewhere else we could find the wild one other than the forest.

Jonah yawned and closed his laptop, setting it on the side table next to the couch. “That snake was him. There are no bright green snakes like that in this forest. It was like one you would find in a tropical rainforest, not a temperate one.”

“His eyes did flicker to orange, so I think you’re right.” Trace carefully extracted himself from under the pillow I was laying my head on in his lap and stood. “Of course, it has to be a damn snake.”

I sighed and rolled onto my back, putting my feet in Jonah’s lap and staring at the ceiling. “The prophecy says the wild one will hold me tight when time is running out.”

“Makes sense for it to be a snake then, although it doesn’t fill me with joy to know he’s going to probably wrap himself around you.” Jonah rubbed my feet absently. “I’m most worried about how animalistic his eyes were. With Trace and Lucas, I can see the humanity still in their eyes.”

“Maybe he stays in his animal form more than his human one.” Trace went to the screen door and looked out. There was a nice breeze, and the temperature was mild. “I hope he doesn’t decide to come into the RV through the toilet.”

Jonah snorted. “He’s too big to come through the toilet. Don’t worry, I’ll protect you if he gets inside somehow. Can’t say I will if he gets into your boot, though.”

Trace looked over his shoulder with a glare. “That isn’t funny.”

I laughed and stood up, going to him and winding my arms around him. “You know, my tentacles look like snakes.”

Trace groaned and turned in my arms, wrapping his around me. “Don’t put that image in my head. I like your tentacles.”

“I’m going to take a shower.” Jonah stood up, his stretching causing his bones to pop.

I cringed. “That didn’t sound good.”

We’d all taken showers after we got back from the forest, but the last few days Jonah had been taking two a day. He said his skin itched and it soothed him. Yet another thing to worry about.

“I’m going to call Devon and make sure everything is all right with the animals.” Trace kissed my forehead and followed Jonah down the hall.

Needing some fresh air, I stepped outside and sat down on the steps. It was a nice night with the wind blowing the leaves gently and the sounds of the forest combining in a pleasing song. We were close to water, but not close enough that I felt the urge to shift.

I hadn’t felt my kraken stir much since we’d left, and I wondered if the more mates I bonded with, the more control I’d have over it. It could have also been Trace’s feather causing it. My back hadn’t ached at all after drinking down the juice that had his feather ground up in it.
