CHAPTER NINE

TRACE

I didn’t get cold very often, but it was colder than Jack Frost’s butt plug as I flew through the clouds. They were thick, and the air was too thin above them, so there wasn’t another choice. Jonah clung to my neck, occasionally letting his claws sink too deep.

When I’d heard the gravel crunch under tires and looked outside, I knew we were in deep shit as the agents got out of their SUV.

The noise woke Jonah, and when I’d gone into the bedroom, he’d been straining to free himself. He knew they were coming for him, and I wasn’t about to let them take him.

As soon as I’d unchained him, he’d grabbed me by the neck and locked his angry red eyes on mine. The command he’d growled didn’t leave me much choice. He was my alpha, and he was stronger than ever before.

“Moon. Fly,” he’d growled. “Building.”

I hadn’t understood at first until we’d taken off and he’d tugged my neck in the direction he wanted. But after a while, I could see the city’s lights when I flew at the bottom of the clouds.

The clouds were starting to become sparse, and I worried about us being seen. I was flying fast and high, but who knew if someone was looking through binoculars or a telescope.

Jonah let go with one hand, and in my periphery, I saw him point to a tall building. I hadn’t the faintest clue which building was which, but it was one of the taller ones.

Now that I knew where we were headed for sure, I sped up, hoping if someone did catch a glance, we’d be gone before they could get a picture or video.

There was a massive skyscraper, but I didn’t see anywhere to land besides a narrow grating. I circled, and Jonah dug his claws into me, a growl rumbling against my neck.

I landed, squeezing my large body onto the gangway along the edge. There was a lot of mechanical shit on top. The top of the building was virtually non-existent because there were several stories of machines of some sort.

The wind was strong, so I didn’t shift and held on to the grating with my claws just to be safe. Jonah jumped from my back, grabbing onto the railing that was the only thing keeping him from going over. There were harnesses attached to the railing for humans, but Jonah didn’t make any move toward one.

I wished I could talk to him in my head or something because I didn’t know what the hell he was doing. He wanted to see the moon, but it was hours until the moon was at its peak level of fullness, and it was currently hidden behind clouds.

It wasn’t exactly clear if Jonah was even still Jonah. Did he just hang out in his head, unable to control his werewolf? I couldn’t imagine having to experience that.

A tear fell from my eye, and damn it. Why did all of this have to be so difficult?

As if sensing I was upset, Jonah stalked back toward me.
