We continued pushing the soldiers back up the hill.
While we had Custer backpedaling up Last Stand Hill, Crazy Horse noticed that Bear With Horns was hurt. He rode to see if he could help him. Upon his arrival, Bear With Horns reached up with his rifle and handed it to Crazy Horse. “Take them all out!” Bear With Horns gasped before collapsing lifelessly to the ground.
Crazy Horse took the rifle, said a short prayer for Bear With Horns, and rejoined the attack. As Custer fled to the top of the hill, the Cheyenne cut him off from the north side, and Custer and his remaining men were surrounded.
Seeing that Custer was their leader, Crazy Horse saw a chance to humiliate him by letting him live. In this way the soldiers’ head man could go back to the white people and let them know of our strength. So he shouted to all our warriors to kill all the soldiers but Custer. However, Crazy Horse did not count on two heyoka warriors scuttling his plan.
Since a heyoka has the habit of doing everything backwards or the opposite, Crazy Horse’s request was treated no differently. Upon hearing him, the first heyoka, Quick Bear, rode his horse straight at Custer and knocked him to the ground with his war club. Custer fell with his head resting on the rock that Sitting Bull had placed on the hill. A second heyoka, Scarleg, who was also the spirit keeper for our Nation, followed Quick Bear and fired his rifle, once into Custer’s head and once into his heart. He then dismounted and cut Custer’s index finger off and hung it from his staff. By taking his finger, he was now keeping his spirit. Crazy Horse shook his head in resignation.
