Notebook Time: Moment Modeling
THESE FIRST exercises can be used with either books or movies, because what weâre looking for here is a moment, a feeling, a plot device that really flips our switch. Weâre going to look at the moment in terms of plot and character devices and see if we can recreate that feeling, that engagement or emotion, using different characters and a different plotâbut getting the same warm fuzzies.
I have this laid out as strictly a thought exercise, but if you want to set it down in your notebook, thatâs fine too. The point here is to think carefully about what goes into creating the emotions that will tell your own unique story. If doing this helps you break the ice for your next work, thatâs wonderful. All I want you to do here is to be aware of what it is you love about your favorite stories of love.
For some of us, itâs when we first hear about Jamie Fraserâs ghost outside of Claireâs house, before we even know who he is. That moment haunts us through Outlanderâwe want them so badly to live happily together. For some of us itâs when Eve and Roarke are arguing about whether Eve should wear the obscenely large diamond he gave her as a gift, and just when we think her pride is going to make her walk out on him forever, she turns around and proclaims sheâll do anything to stayâand he asks her if she thought heâd let her leave in the first place.
It doesnât matter which moment weâve been trying to recreate in our writing, but it is time to look at the things that build up to that moment and see if we can find the magic ingredients to make moments of our own.
