They pulled up to the house late -- around nine thirty, damn near ten -- and it was a welcome sight to have the kitchen light on. Better than that, the entire roof was lined with big, bright Christmas lights.

“Look at that!” It wasn’t home yet, but it was getting better every time. “I had Vicki leave the light on, but she didn’t tell me her boys had put Christmas lights up. She said she stocked the fridge and made muffins.” She came in twice a month to flush toilets and dust, clear the fridge. That shit.

Mackey hadn’t bothered with the pain pills last night, but tonight he was thinking he ought. Everything hurt. Everything.

Still, they were home.

“Vicki?” Sid shut the truck off and stretched, and he heard Sid’s back pop. “Oh man. That felt good.”

“Little lady that I pay to clean. Her husband and boys fix fence and roofs and shit. They cleared the road for us.” They were the ones who’d taught him about bears.

He had a momma bear on his land. Damn, that rocked his world.

The house was a big old thing -- all windows and pine. It was going to be something one day. It was going to sparkle.

“Oh, that’s handy that you have them.” Sid slid out of the truck with a groan. The man had obviously had enough of driving. “Beautiful night. Look at all the stars. I’ll grab the bags.”

“Yeah. I’m coming.” He took his go bag and his gear. He was fixin’ to have to do a shit-ton of laundry. “Come on in. I’ll give you the tour.”

“Tell me I get a tour of the outside when it’s daylight. What an amazing place. The views from all those windows must be incredible.” Sid craned his neck to look up at the second floor. “And the lights… so neat. Festive. It actually feels kind of like Christmas now.”

“They surprised me with those.” He took the stairs slow, rubbing the belly of the bear carved into the column, and then put in the code for the front door. “Come on in.”

The house smelled like sap and vanilla and leather, and he flipped a switch, letting the lights fill the front room. “Kitchen’s behind you. You got your choice of rooms -- the master is upstairs, and there’s one guest room down here that’s all made up.”

“I’ll do the guest then. If it’s easy. Thank you.” Sid walked into the room and wandered, looking impressed. “So much woodwork, so no wonder it’s taking forever to fix up. But it’s beautiful. It will be gorgeous when it’s done. Wow.”

“Thank you. It’s--” Going to be home someday. He hoped. “--All mine.”

“I’m a little jealous. I own nothing. I don’t even own a car.” Sid dumped his bag at the foot of the stairs. “Tour first? Or are you hungry?”

“Come on, tour first.” They’d been snacking all day, after all. “There are six bedrooms -- or so they told me. There’s four rooms filled with old crap. I have two cleaned out.
