CHAPTER 12

***TIM***

Tim wasn’t sure what he was waiting for; he had more than enough work to do in the office, but he couldn’t make himself walk away from Madeline even though he knew it was what was best for both of them. The memory of the way she’d felt in his arms had haunted him for hours after he’d gotten home, and once he’d finally fallen asleep, she’d filled his dreams, leaving him off balance and confused when he woke up this morning.

Seeing her behaving so differently this morning only made things worse, only made the temptation to give in to what his body wanted all that much more difficult. Freshly showered, her long hair pulled back into a ponytail, her face bare of makeup, he felt like he was seeing a glimpse of the real Madeline for the first time and couldn’t drag himself away. But he wasn’t ready to believe that she’d changed, knew that it could all be an act, and if it wasn’t, he didn’t want to think about what that meant to him.

He couldn’t miss the way her hands trembled as she washed her coffee cup, and when she finally turned away from the sink and looked over at him, her eyes were full of uncertainty. “I’m not very good at this, but I owe you an apology for the way I’ve been behaving since we met,” she said, her voice shaking a little. “I know that you’re only trying to help me and I should be grateful instead of fighting with you. I’m going to try to do better from now on, but I may not be very good at this working thing. I’ve never done it before. I’ve never taken care of myself either, cooked my own food, or done my own laundry, or all the other things I’m forgetting, but I’m going to start doing all that too. You’ve been nothing but patient with me. I hope I haven’t used it all up because I’m sure I’m going to screw things up some more before I figure it all out.”

At the end of her speech, Madeline took a deep breath and looked at him hopefully, and he had to force himself to breathe through a wave of desire. Fueled by the sincerity he saw in her eyes, it awakened his magic, and his entire body began to tingle and tighten. He knew that he needed to say something, but for a few more long seconds, speech was impossible.

“I think we can work with that,” he said, relieved his voice was even and calm considering the battle going on inside him. “But I think you should apologize to the boys too.”

A smile spread across her face. “I already did, well, maybe not the exact words, but I will right now,” she said. “Thank you, Tim, for everything. You won’t be disappointed. I promise.”

“You’re welcome, Madeline,” he said, returning her smile. “And I’m glad to know that you think I smell good.”

Her cheeks turned
