Bonnie slammed the door harder than she meant to, but her legs were shaking and she wasn’t sure how much longer they were going to hold her. Sinking into a chair just inside the door, she looked up, surprised to see Brian standing behind the reception desk. As soon as he saw her, he rushed over to her, a concerned look on his face, and she wanted to disappear into the floor.

“Bonnie, what’s wrong?” he asked. “You’re white as a sheet. Do I need to call a doctor? Where is Pierce? I thought you went to the party with him.”

She took a deep breath. “I’m okay, I just needed to sit down. It’s been a very long night,” she said. “Just give me a second and I’ll go up to my room.”

“No way, not with the way you look,” Brian said, helping her to her feet. “I think you need a strong drink.”

“No alcohol,” she said, shaking her head. “I don’t drink and Pierce isn’t going to make me start.”

A look of alarm appeared on Brian’s face. “What did Pierce do to you?” he asked, leading her down the hallway to the kitchen.

“Nothing, except try to protect me and ruin both of our lives,” she said, feeling tears threatening. “I’m sorry, that sounded so melodramatic. I’m just confused and upset.”

“A cup of tea will help,” Brian said, guiding her to a chair. “Sit down there and I’ll be right back.”

When he came back with the steaming cup, she felt a little calmer, and after a few sips, not quite as shaky. “Thanks, I’m starting to feel better,” she said. “I’m sorry to put you to so much trouble; it’s late. I’m sure you’d rather be home.”

“It’s no problem, and since I live up in the attic, home isn’t that far,” Brian said. “Do you want to tell me what happened tonight or should I track Pierce down and beat the snot out of him?”

Bonnie smiled at him. “While I appreciate the offer, I don’t think beating him up is going to help,” she said with a sigh. “He’s a stubborn idiot, but I’m still hoping that he’ll make the right choice.”

Brian gave her a funny look. “Bonnie, if something is going on with Pierce, you need to tell me,” he said. “The other day, he mentioned his past coming back to haunt him or something like that.”

“He hasn’t told you about his past?” she asked.

“No, he’s never talked about it, and we’ve never pushed him,” Brian said. “But he always made it clear that it wasn’t good.”

“Then I’m not sure it’s my place to tell you now,” she said with a sigh. “He trusted me enough to tell me. I can’t break that trust, but if it looks like he’s going to do something stupid, that might change.”

“Fair enough,” Brian said. “Just know that we care about him and we’re all here to help, even if he doesn’t quite believe that.”

In her room, the dress hanging in the closet, she
