Stephanie had been so sure that Corey was going to tell her that she had to leave, that she just wasn’t going to fit in at the hotel, it took her a second to absorb what he’d said. “You don’t want me to leave?” she asked, then realized what he’d said. “Wait, did you say the kitchen? Are you sure that’s a good idea? I might blow it up.”

Corey grinned at her. “Don’t worry, that’s not going to happen,” he said. “Brian isn’t going to let you close enough to a stove to blow anything up. The worst you might do is cut your finger off.”

“That’s not funny,” she said, glaring at him. “After the last few days, it could happen.”

“You just had a run of bad luck,” Corey said. “The computer thing really wasn’t your fault.”

“It still feels like it,” she said with a sigh. “But I’m willing to try anything. I really need this job, especially now.”

“What does that mean?” Corey asked.

Her phone rang before she could answer him, and after a quick peek at the display, she shoved it back in her pocket. “I keep getting phone calls from people trying to collect money from me,” she said. “I don’t understand why they’re calling me instead of my aunt. I answered one of the calls and the lady was very rude to me when I told her to call Abagail, so I hung up on her.”

“What do you mean trying to collect money from you?” Corey asked, his face filling with concern. “Are you talking about bills?”

Stephanie nodded. “The florist called, so did the electric company, the phone company, and several stores where we shop all the time, including the grocery store,” she said. “They keep telling me that I’m behind on my bill and need to pay up or they’ll close my accounts and send me to collections. I don’t even know what that means, but it can’t be good.”

Corey sat back in his chair, a thoughtful look on his face. “Something isn’t right about that,” he finally said. “I thought your aunt supported you.”

“My parents only had a small life insurance policy. Aunt Abagail is the one who paid for almost everything,” she explained. “If it hadn’t been for her, I would have ended up in an orphanage, or at least that’s what she always said.”

Corey studied her for a second, then got to his feet. “I’m sorry, I have to go. I have something I need to take care of,” he said. “Brian wants you in the kitchen later this afternoon. About four would be good.”

He was gone before she could say thank you, and she wondered if she’s said something wrong but couldn’t figure out what it could have been. Shrugging it off and telling herself that she’d do better in the kitchen, she picked up her sketchbook and pencil, relief making her almost giddy.

It wasn’t long before she was lost in capturing the mountains on paper, their blue and green peaks topped with snow a challenge that let her forget her troubles for a little while.
