I did have a great show.

One of the best in a long time.

I floated over every note I sang, my body was loose and relaxed, the crowd was energetic, and my all-girl band played the shit outta those instruments.

Not a single misstep, not even the tiniest one, which was unheard of.

But I’d take it.

Because tonight, I needed it.

Afterward, I found myself happily tucked at a private table with Khalida, Aram, and Nasir, knocking back cocktails and champagne.

“You might want to slow down before you make yourself sick,” Khalida said in my ear, as quietly as she could in the loud club. I appreciated her concern – and that she hadn’t made it a topic of discussion for the table – but I shook my head.

“It has been a good night,” I told her. “If I’m good and drunk, maybe I’ll be able to round it out with a good night’s sleep.”

She frowned. “Whoa.” She deftly removed my latest drink from my hand, pulling it away from me. “Drinking yourself to sleep, Celi? That sounds healthy to you?”

I took it back from her, leaning into Nasir to keep it from her reaching hands. “Healthier than lying awake all night waiting for the damn devil to run his finger across my back again, I guarantee that.”

“Wait, what?”

Aram and Nasir had been carrying their own conversation, but they went quiet now, joining Khalida in her sudden concern. I sighed, then swallowed the last of the drink uninhibited.

“It’s not really anything new, is it?” I asked. “It’s the same dark feeling from my house, only… just for a second, and it passed.”

“When?” Nasir asked, his voice low and his shoulders tense, on obvious high alert.

“Earlier, at rehearsal. Part of why I booked that massage,” I said, then instantly dropped my gaze as the memory of that “massage” sent a jolt between my thighs.

“At rehearsal?!” Khalida asked, alarmed. “Meaning here?”

I shrugged. “Yeah.” The instant spike in their anxiety – all three of them – was palpable, and it was obvious they knew something I didn’t.

“I thought the barrier was strong enough,” Khalida hissed, intending the words only for Aram, whose nostrils flared in response.

“So did I, but the wider the area, the weaker – it’s covering the building. We need to make it smaller.”

“Wait a minute – are you some kinda angel or something?” I said, peering across the table at Aram. “The devil reached across your barrier to touch me?”

Khalida let out a dry laugh. “He’s no angel, and we’re not dealing with the devil… supposedly.”

“Hey,” Nasir hissed, with a pointed glare and Aram and Khalida – like they’d said something they weren’t supposed to. “Celi,” he turned to me. “I should take you back to your room.”

I frowned, and shook my head. “I’m not ready yet.”

“I think you are,” he said, in a tone that didn’t really leave room for negotiation.

“Just one more drink!” I whined as he stood, easily pulling me from my seat to hook an arm around my waist.

“I’ll fix you something from the mini bar,” he promised, meeting my gaze.
