* That night Major Watke wrote his wife about the meeting: “My people observed an unfortunate act the other day and I reported it. Colonel Henderson has been directed to investigate and report it to the commanding general. I didn’t make any friends, but my conscience is clear.” Watke supplied the letter to the Peers Panel.
† One clue to Young’s state of mind was provided by Lieutenant John P. Newell, the general’s personal pilot. He testified that while the crew was waiting at Landing Zone Dotti for the meeting to break up, Young’s aide, Lieutenant Donald White, “told me that the general was meeting Colonel Holladay and Major Watke down there, and that heads were going to roll, that he was going to relieve somebody of their command because of something that happened.”
‡ Nearly two years after his testimony before the Peers Panel, Medina—then a civilian—publicly acknowledged that he had lied to Colonel Henderson about the extent of civilian casualties at My Lai 4. Testifying as a defense witness during the court-martial of Henderson in November, 1971, Medina said he reported the twenty to twenty-eight civilian casualties as victims of gunship or artillery fire when, in fact, “I had a suspicion they had been shot by members of my command … not wanting to believe my people would do this, I tried to give the impression they wouldn’t.” At the time, Medina testified, he already had been informed by his three platoon leaders that at least 106 villagers had been slain in My Lai 4, but he did not give Henderson that information. Medina further admitted lying to the Peers Panel and also to the Army Inspector General’s office during its investigation of the atrocity in mid-1969. Medina resigned his commission one month before his appearance at Henderson’s court-martial.
