13. Brother

ISAAC AND MONICA HAD gone to bed for the evening while my mother prepares everything I needed for my journey. I was still in a state of disbelief, considering everything she told me this morning. Not only was I the daughter of a Vampyre, but the two people I’d known all my life, the two I had called Mother and Father, didn’t have feelings for each other. The signs of affection—the kissing, the hugging, everything—were all a part of some elaborate subterfuge to hide the torment each of them held inside.

I could hardly bear the pain of my broken family as it was, being forced to marry; this was all just too much for one person to tolerate. My little brother was in just as much pain as I was, and I scoffed at the idea of having to tell him the truth. Monica was only four years old, and in her innocence, she wouldn’t understand all of this anyway.

I feared Isaac wouldn’t understand either; he was just a little boy, brokenhearted by what he saw his father doing. Would he really understand what our parents had gone through all these years? I could barely understand it myself. Why put up with laws that go against human nature? They were the lawmakers with the power to change things. With the death of Balathan Cummings, one would think the madam would have decreed romantic love permissible, allowing people to marry for love and not obligation. It would have saved her, my mother, and my father decades of sneaking around and the heartbreak of their children.

I was set to leave for the neutral territory in a few days, and I didn’t know whether or not to talk to Isaac about what my mother told me. He’d resent Father until he’d told the truth. Even then, what would his reaction be when he found out that our parents had no real love for each other? I wasn’t even sure I was emotionally stable enough to console him before I left. The weight of her truth was wearing on my shoulders like a ton of stones.

I still couldn’t believe that I was half Vampyre. What would my brother and sister think if they found out? Would they fear me? Shun me? Disown me? With all the scary stories that had been drilled into their heads since birth on the viciousness and malevolent nature of Vampyres, I was afraid how they’d react. I walked up the stairs and peeked into their room to see them one last time.

Monica was sound asleep with her thumb in her mouth. She was such a beautiful little girl. I had no idea if I’d ever see them again, but one thing was certain: I would always have that picture of her sucking her little thumb imprinted in my mind. Isaac wasn’t in bed beside her. In fact, I didn’t see him in the room at all. I didn’t want to turn on the light and wake up Monica, so I flicked the lights in the hallway on to get a better view of their room.
