St John galloped Gentleman’s Honour back to his own lake where St John saw the tiny figure of Henrietta pacing. For once the ghost didn’t fade away, and St John found he didn’t like the tear streaks down Henrietta’s pretty face. As soon as St John began slowing his stallion, Henrietta lifted her skirts and started running towards him.

“Sabine, is she safe? Was that Daniel? Are they okay?” Henrietta cried as St John slipped down from his horse. Henrietta ran straight into St John’s arms and clasped him to her. St John’s arms wrapped around her and a sense of familiarity fell over him. He’d done this act many times before in the past.

“Sabine is fine, the puppy got shot not her or the child. They are both safe in Oakwood Manor and yes, Henrietta, Daniel returned in time to save his woman and child.”

“That was really Daniel, St John tell me, please, speak truth, my heart could not take false hope.” Henrietta clung to St John tears in the corners of her eyes.

“It was Daniel,” St John confirmed, far too confused to think on what he was saying. Before St John said anything else, Henrietta blinked from his arms and reappeared at the closest point to Oakwood Manor she could get. St John knew without asking, Henrietta would keep a close vigil over Oakwood, now she’d been informed Daniel was back.

Jed met him on his way back to the stables and took the reins of Gentleman’s Honour. St John ambled back to his empty home, no workmen remained, they’d congregated at Oakwood Manor. Henrietta remained by the lake keeping her eye out for her beloved Daniel and St John was left with his thoughts.

More questions had been raised today with no answer. St John needed to know the full story of Sabine and Daniel. Had St John seen a three-hundred-year-old ghost made alive again? St John needed the answer to several things, what did Henrietta’s husband need to forgive her for? What did Henrietta blame herself for that Henrietta thought she required forgiveness for? Why were the Harrington’s and Courtenay’s linked, and especially a link that lasted over a thousand years? And what of the mysterious remaining four that the ghosts mentioned?

His ghostly visitors had hinted at things beyond St John’s control, beyond his knowledge. Still, they’d also said the answers lay in the past. St John resigned himself to researching his history. The ghosts also referred to the fact St John wasn’t descended from the cousin’s line, he was descended from their line, the true bloodline. He’d instinctively recognised Daniel and for those few moment’s he’d a grip on his memories, his past and known Daniel for a brother.

But that fleeting grasp slipped through his fingers, the harder St John tried to hold on to it, the faster it went. He’d had his answers there at his fingertips for them to slip through his fingers like sand. St John lay back on his bed frustrated and annoyed, as sad as it seemed, for those few moments, his life had made sense, perfect sense.
