My dear Birdie,

I haven’t heard from you yet, so I must only hope the letter arrived and you are too busy to reply. I’ll be more diligent about writing to you regularly, now that I know there may be concern about delivery.

Trixie and the boys have chicken pox. Mam says everyone is so itchy, there is always someone in the bath tub and always someone running around outside drying off their Calamine. Mam wrote to say it looks like she is raising a litter of pink-spotted Dalmatians addled with fleas.

I thought that would make you giggle. At least we don’t have chicken pox.

How are you feeling? What are you teaching?

I have a class of preschoolers. There are eight little ones and they all call me “Miss Alma.” Alma Jean is too much for a four-year-old’s mouth, and most are just learning English. I have a favorite, even though I know I shouldn’t.

I miss home so much, Birdie. And I miss you. I dream of you—the last one involved us at a church dance, surrounded by good men.

Please write me back, Bird. Tell me things are okay so I can stop worrying.
