Ted stepped into the shower, running the water extra hot. Maybe this was a bad idea, he thought, looking down. All that warmth only made him think of Eve. He reluctantly reached for the knob and cooled the shower’s stream until his body began to behave. What a great couples’ coordinator he was. Coordinating himself right into luscious Eve’s arms. Damn. He adjusted the shower knob further until the water ran ice-cold. There! He deserved that. Ted lathered his hair, soaped up, and rinsed off, shutting the shower off lickety-split.

He toweled off quickly, thinking he should have known better. What was I thinking? I’ve never done anything like that before. Well, okay, maybe he had. But certainly never in the line of duty. And clearly, never with one of his Wild West Brides! It wasn’t like he’d intended things to go that far. He’d thought maybe they’d make out a little. Sneak in a few private kisses… The fact that he’d stashed condoms in his pocket attested more to his optimism than to what he’d believed would actually develop between them.

Ted wrapped a towel around his waist, shaking his head. That’s just how things were with Eve, and there was no escaping it. One lingering kiss led to the next, and then another one. And, after a while, kissing couldn’t be enough. It would never be enough. Ted wanted all of her. Well, I’ll be… Ted gritted his teeth and strode back to the bathroom, the towel around his waist gripped tightly with one hand. He used the other to reach in the shower and turn the water back on. Ice-cold.

He had to get a grip. Losing his head over one of his clients wouldn’t do. All right, so maybe she wasn’t really one of his clients. She was here to do a job and had explained all that. So, what was Ted’s role here? Spinning all out of control every time she batted those gorgeous brown eyes? He was drawn to her, he’d admit it. Eve was funny and pretty and incredibly easy to talk to. She was also unbelievably easy to kiss. It was almost as if her lips had been invented just for his, as if all of her had. They’d fit together so perfectly.

Ted sighed heavily as the frigid water streamed down. Tomorrow, he had an adventure to lead. He’d talk to her afterward. He knew he had to give her information for her story. But the next order of business would involve learning what she thought of him—on a personal level.

Ted couldn’t bear to believe she was playing him. Only using him for her article. But he’d been used before and was well aware—much more painfully than many men—that sort of thing happened. Ted thought of his parents’ disapproval, and of his former girlfriend, then suddenly there was no need for the shower. He shut off the water, toweled dry, and sulked into the next room.

Those were two dour thoughts when coupled together. Memories of Rebecca and the awareness that his parents were still in town.
