The Purpose of Process

It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.

Ernest Hemingway

The Benefits of Process

Process is not always our favorite experience. It means waiting, and we are a people that does not like to wait. We like things fast; we want it now. Actually, we wanted it yesterday. There is a season for everything—a time to plant and a time to reap. The principle behind how things unfold during seasons can be found in both the Bible and in the natural realm. It is called seedtime and harvest. We plant a seed, we wait, and, in time, we can expect a harvest from that seed. What is in between seedtime and reaping a harvest is inherent in the name itself: time. The order is seed, then time, and then harvest. We do not plant a seed and see a harvest that day, or the next day or the next. There is always a waiting period, and the wait time can feel long. It may be seed, time and harvest, but it can feel more like seed, tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime and harvest. If we had things our way, we would plant a seed and have a mature tree in five minutes, but that is not how things work. The Lord can and will perform miracles where no waiting is involved, but we will always have at least one area, probably a lot more than one, where we have to walk something out and endure process. Why? What is the point in all this waiting? Obviously, there must be a reason if God designed it this way, so what is it?

Process Produces Character

But we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.

Romans 5:3–4

A Scripture like that can stir up some emotions. While we are waiting, we are not always so interested in perseverance and character. We become tired of waiting and ready for the promise to get here already, but waiting develops qualities that cannot be gleaned any other way. Just like a seed takes time to develop and mature, so do we. As we wait and endure, character is being produced in us.

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.

Helen Keller

Our heavenly Father is not keeping blessings from us to teach us a lesson. He is not holding back because He is mean and does not want to give to us. God is not a withholder; that is not His nature. It is His good pleasure to see us prosper and be blessed.

Let them shout for joy and be glad, who favor my righteous cause; and let them say continually, “Let the LORD be magnified, who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.”

Psalm 35:27

He loves us so much that He does not want to promote us until we are equipped and mature enough to handle it. Our earthly father did not give us keys and access to the family car when we were ten years old.
