Chapter 7
Today was Friday, and as I did most days, the first thing I did was take a run with the dogs. When I returned to the cottage, I noticed that Josie was pulling into her parking space. I knew that sheâd gone in to work at five oâclock to open since Tegan was still out, so I supposed the fact that she was home at ten wasnât all that odd, but sheâd been working such long hours that I really was surprised to see her.
âYouâre home early,â I said after approaching her car with the dogs running ahead of me.
âTegan is back. She told me to go home and take the rest of the weekend off.â
âThatâs great. Youâve been working such long hours the past few days. Is Tegan okay?â I wanted to ask about the situation with Booker but wasnât sure it was really any of my business.
âI guess Tegan talked to Booker, and it was her opinion that he seemed fairly convinced that this move to Hawaii is the right thing for him. Tegan is brokenhearted, of course, but she doesnât want to stand in his way, so sheâs cutting ties with him. I guess Jackson is going to stay in Bookerâs cottage until Booker decides whether or not to let it go.â
I guessed I understood her desire for a clean break, but given the depth of their relationship before Hawaii came into the picture, ending things the way it had turned out was really sad.
âBy the way, speaking of Jackson,â Josie said. âI decided to stop and talk to him after I got off work in the hope that he would have spoken to Booker, and he told me that one of the local fishermen hooked something he wasnât expecting this morning.â
âSomething he wasnât expecting?â
âA body. Probably the body the lady with the dogs saw since the guy had what was left of blue jeans and a white t-shirt on.â
I wrinkled my nose. âWhat was left of?â
She nodded. âAccording to Jackson, the guy had been nibbled on. Plus, given the timeline the lady with the dogs who reported seeing the body Monday provided, heâs been in the water for almost a week.â
âDid you hear who it was?â
She shook her head. âJackson didnât know, but Iâm betting Parker does. I was going to call her once I got back to the cottage. You should come by.â
âI will. I need to feed the dogs and then shower. Iâll be over in about half an hour. Now that Todd has a body, it seems as if heâs going to have no choice but to open an investigation. Parker will want to be out in front of it. She may need our help.â
Josie headed down the path leading to her cottage, and I headed down the path leading to mine. I wasnât sure how much damage the body would have suffered after spending so much time in the water, but I hoped Deputy Todd would be able to ID the guy right away so we could get on to the matter of figuring out what had happened to him.
