Chapter 7

Today was Friday, and as I did most days, the first thing I did was take a run with the dogs. When I returned to the cottage, I noticed that Josie was pulling into her parking space. I knew that she’d gone in to work at five o’clock to open since Tegan was still out, so I supposed the fact that she was home at ten wasn’t all that odd, but she’d been working such long hours that I really was surprised to see her.

“You’re home early,” I said after approaching her car with the dogs running ahead of me.

“Tegan is back. She told me to go home and take the rest of the weekend off.”

“That’s great. You’ve been working such long hours the past few days. Is Tegan okay?” I wanted to ask about the situation with Booker but wasn’t sure it was really any of my business.

“I guess Tegan talked to Booker, and it was her opinion that he seemed fairly convinced that this move to Hawaii is the right thing for him. Tegan is brokenhearted, of course, but she doesn’t want to stand in his way, so she’s cutting ties with him. I guess Jackson is going to stay in Booker’s cottage until Booker decides whether or not to let it go.”

I guessed I understood her desire for a clean break, but given the depth of their relationship before Hawaii came into the picture, ending things the way it had turned out was really sad.

“By the way, speaking of Jackson,” Josie said. “I decided to stop and talk to him after I got off work in the hope that he would have spoken to Booker, and he told me that one of the local fishermen hooked something he wasn’t expecting this morning.”

“Something he wasn’t expecting?”

“A body. Probably the body the lady with the dogs saw since the guy had what was left of blue jeans and a white t-shirt on.”

I wrinkled my nose. “What was left of?”

She nodded. “According to Jackson, the guy had been nibbled on. Plus, given the timeline the lady with the dogs who reported seeing the body Monday provided, he’s been in the water for almost a week.”

“Did you hear who it was?”

She shook her head. “Jackson didn’t know, but I’m betting Parker does. I was going to call her once I got back to the cottage. You should come by.”

“I will. I need to feed the dogs and then shower. I’ll be over in about half an hour. Now that Todd has a body, it seems as if he’s going to have no choice but to open an investigation. Parker will want to be out in front of it. She may need our help.”

Josie headed down the path leading to her cottage, and I headed down the path leading to mine. I wasn’t sure how much damage the body would have suffered after spending so much time in the water, but I hoped Deputy Todd would be able to ID the guy right away so we could get on to the matter of figuring out what had happened to him.
