Chapter Thirteen
“Joseph’s dads name was Rufus. He was the only man that I’ve had in my life besides my family and kids. I was raised by good faithful Christian parents who loved all of us beyond measure. I admit that I was a tad bit on the spoiled side but I think it was a healthy dose. I was the baby and the only girl, so I think being spoiled didn't come as a surprise to anyone, not even my brothers.
My parents kept us kids active in the church and in the community serving in whatever capacity that we could. Rufus came into the picture when I was barely 13. I was young, dumb and stuck on stupid at that time. Very inexperienced at that age, but being around Rufus made me feel kinda grownup. He was a boy beyond his years due to his own crazy upbringing. Anyway, he was the love of my life and would eventually be the reason my life went into a spiral of darkness.
"My brothers, on more than one occasion, had tried to protect me from a force that I didn’t even know was there. They knew a whole lot about what was out in the world, while I knew nothing. I would come to find out that my brothers had been around the corner themselves, but that’s neither here nor there. I got with Rufus, I allowed him to freely walk into my space, and destroy my life. When I went away to college to get away from him and his controlling ways, he followed. That’s when he snatched away my dignity and self-worth. I did things that would cause my parents to weep if they knew about them."
After she said that, she turned her head and looked out of the window, as if walking down an already paved road. I sat there waiting for her to turn back towards me and finish her story. When she didn’t, I noticed the gentle rise and fall of her chest and knew she’d fallen asleep.
I was greatly disappointed. I wanted to hear it all. I wanted to know about how she’d gotten on drugs. And why had she said Josephs dads’ name “was” Rufus? And more about her parents. After fifteen minutes I resigned that she wasn’t waking up anytime soon.
I got up and while patting Jacob on his back, I started walking around the room again, looking at more of her pictures. I came across the picture of a guy who looked like he was in prison, but I couldn’t be for sure. I picked the photo up and saw Ms. Joanna, her parents, a female and two males. That’s when I concluded that yes, one of them was in prison attire and that he had a long scar going down his cheek. I put the picture back into its place, and damn near had a heart attack when I heard Ms. Joannas voice. “That’s my favorite pictures of us all together." I turned around and saw that she was wide awake with a smile on her face.
