Her mind active, she did not sleep but kept watch out the cave entrance.

The night closed in all around her but for the fire, she wasn’t sure how long he was gone, but eventually she heard the slightest movements of a horse and aimed her gun. Calian slowly stepped into view. He carried several rabbits or hares and a bag. Giving her a nod seeing her there with the gun, she moved back to allow him in with his horse as he placed the food near the firepit and moved his horse back next to hers brushing it down.

Putting her gun away, she came in and looked in the bag, vegetables. All washed and ready to go like the hares. Setting about making the racks she’d seen him do before he was back to help her, dropping full water skins and putting a pan under the cooking meat juices, he cut up the vegetables and let them cook slowly in the same juices. Going to a pouch on his saddle, he came back with a little salt to go over everything and put it away again.

She stared at him in wonder. There was no store here and yet, he had everything to make meal.

The day drawing to a close. There was no sign of who they were expecting.
