CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

I missed sleeping in a real bed.

Dawn came far too soon, and with it, my return to reality.

Lilia burst into the tent with far too much energy, her limbs still moving, almost continuing to dance even though the drums had long since died. Her eyes were dreamy and her smile wide. I hoped she’d found more joy than I left her with.

“I absolutely do not want to give you back,” she said as I unfolded my blue shift and began to put it on. “I don’t think we gave you a very good impression. But we’re happy here, even in our tents, and those of us who live here do not hold with Khesere.” She made a face. “As much as is possible, at least.”

She was better at the laces than Tristan had been when he hurriedly tied them.

“We’re not banished,” she told me. “We choose to live on the edges of Craithe because it’s easier. Being who we are, they are always watching us. In the city, we wouldn’t be able to take a breath without the Khasar knowing. Out here, we can take at least three before he’s told.” A smile rested on her face, but there was a hardness in her eyes that told me their life was not easy nor simple. No doubt the royal family of Briolane was always watched. I’d just happened to stumble into it on a day where there was enough chaos to enjoy some liberty.

I had so many questions I wanted to ask her. Instead, I held out my arms so she could lace me into the dark blue fabric of my dress.

“They seem very protective of you,” Lilia said quietly. “I know my brother, and I know the rest of the Lorem well enough by now. They haven’t hurt you?”

No.

“You like being with them?”

I met her eyes in the mirror. Nerves jangled down my spine. It was a leading question, and one that could come back to haunt me, but she’d helped me, and I trusted Roan. Yes. I nodded.

“Be careful,” she said. “Like I told you, whatever it is that’s drawing you together, it is plainly visible. I don’t need to tell you why it’s dangerous.”

She did not. I hoped she would say the same thing to them, because there was only so much I could do. Soon I would be back in chains, and would do my best to become nothing but a pretty object until we left the city. Even then, we had to be careful. If what Lilia said was true, and Meriah saw it…

It wasn’t safe.

We had to be more than careful. Following every rule we could so we weren’t reported back to the Order and the Khasar. The last thing I wanted was to be removed as the Lorem’s Inert.

Though that might happen anyway, if they tested me today and still found no limit to the depth of my Inertia.

“There.” Lilia smoothed the back of my dress down. “All back to normal.”

I sighed, and she laughed.
