Chapter 17

Freya had allowed Conner to drive. After she sat with the motor running for five minutes, he had pulled her to the passenger seat and took over. She gave him directions to the old train station. While in use, it would be empty this time of day. Callum was a bastard, but he was a smart one. She turned when Conner pulled to the side of the road.

“The station’s another mile ahead.”

Conner got out of the vehicle and opened the door, allowing a large grey wolf to jump onto the seat. “I know. I’m bringing a little backup.”

Freya pet the large animal. His fur was as soft as down. Her ministrations had the wolf leaning against her hand, pushing for more attention. Her lip twitched. “He’s beautiful. I didn’t know you had a pet.”

Conner grunted. “Thorn is not a pet. He is a Dragon who was cursed and trapped in this form.”

Her arms circled around the wolf protectively as Conner pulled onto the road. “What happened to him?”

“A powerful mage captured Legion and was siphoning his magic. It would have destroyed the Dragon race. Thorn killed the mage, but the bastard used a druid spell on Thorn. A twisted dark version that no Dragon could reverse. He has been a wolf for thousands of years and no longer remembers having his wings.” The pain in Conner’s voice squeezed her heart.

“It’s more than that. Him being a fellow Dragon, I mean.”

Conner smiled. “Our bond is growing.”

“You look out for him. You trust him. He was more than a fellow Dragon.”

He nodded. “Thorn was mine and Ian’s best friend. After Ian died, Thorn helped me move on. He was the one who suggested my glamour to be Ian’s face. While my brethren see me, I left humanity with a part of Ian.”

“I’m sorry about your brother.”

“Thorn and I were hunting Ian’s killer when the mage attacked Legion. It forced me to abandon my search for my brother’s murderer.”

She nodded. “They needed you. Legion needed you.”

“Yes. Most of my brethren sleep, but that option is not open to Thorn. Until recently, we thought he had lost his magic, but he seems to have kept his personal power.”

Her eyes widened. “Personal power?”

“We all have one magic that is unique to us. Thorn can put any living creature to sleep.”

“What is your ability?”

Conner was quiet for a moment, making her doubt he would answer. “While we can alter the memories of humans, my abilities are more powerful.”

A breath stuttered. “Did you alter my memories?”

Conner glanced at her. “My power will never work on you. You are my mate. I want you to see me as I am. Good or bad, you will see it all.”

She unbuckled her seatbelt as they pulled into the parking lot of the train station. “Good.”

As she suspected, the train station was empty. They made their way to the concrete area with a covered awning. There were two sets of train tracks going in opposite directions, separated by a metal fence.
