Chapter Twenty-Seven

AGAIN, I FELT SOMETHING drastic happen to my body as I tingled from head to toe. It felt like I was being dipped in ice, while being set on fire at the same time, but it wasn’t particularly painful. Ruen and Aurora were far more affected than I was. The vampire doubled over, groaning in pain. My bestie hissed in agony as her body underwent its own transformation.

I tugged the pair away from the blazing light of the magical doorway and ducked behind something big and blurry. Hoping it was a tree and not the leg of a colossal giant, I blinked my eyes until they cleared. “What the hell?” I murmured when I examined myself. My voice sounded clogged and strangely phlegmy.

Clumps of a black seaweed-like substance hung from my arms, legs and body. My skin was dark green and was covered in thick scales. My clothes had turned into raggedy black sackcloth. I still had my backpack, but it had changed into a cloth sack again. I held my hands up and spread my fingers to find webbed skin between them. Even my fingernails had transformed. They were now long, sharp and dark green. I looked down at my feet to find they were webbed and possessed long toenails that almost looked like claws.

Once again, Ruen had changed into his true vampire form. I was still taller than he was in my new body and judged myself to be about seven feet tall. Skeletally thin, the leech’s clothes were in even worse shape than mine. The same colorless, odorless fluid oozed from his pores, giving him a slimy appearance. Unfortunately, my own pores seemed to be secreting something similar. The difference between us was that my ooze smelled swampy.

Aurora’s transformation had been just as drastic as my sidekick’s. The curse had definitely been broken, because she was no longer a bird in the underworld. Instead, she had a distinctly humanoid form that was a few inches taller than she’d been on my world. Her skin was gray, with streaks of blue and green and was as hard as armor. Small spikes ran along the backs of her arms up to her shoulders.

Bent over and still recovering from her journey through the portal, her hands were covering her face. Longer spikes protruded from the nape of her neck, growing smaller towards her lower back. I could see the spikes beneath her shirt. Her hair was mostly gray, but it had blue and green streaks as well. It was still short and spiky. Her clothes were similar to mine, but had fewer tatters.

“Are you okay?” I asked, patting her on the shoulder gently.

Aurora jerked at the contact, then dropped her hands. Her head tilted back and she gaped up at me. “Saige?” she asked in wonder. Her voice was deeper and different here, but it wasn’t horrible like mine was. Her eyes were still brilliant green.

“Yeah, it’s me,” I confirmed as Ruen straightened up.

The vampire’s soulless black eyes came to rest on me, then he barked out a laugh.
