Alpin was quiet as he stared out the window. There was no way Merrick hadn’t noticed, but thankfully, he didn’t say anything about it. He was probably one of the few who wouldn’t ask Alpin what was going on and why he wasn’t talking.

Maybe it meant they belonged together or something like that. After yesterday, Alpin would have been ready to say yes, but after this evening, he wasn’t sure. He’d been alone when he’d woken up, and he hadn’t been surprised.

Merrick had been vulnerable. He’d allowed Alpin to see more than he usually showed anyone, and Alpin had expected him to freak out. The problem was that he didn’t know if Merrick had gotten over it. Even if he had, what did it mean? Was it a one-night thing, or was Merrick ready for more?

It was impossible to know. They’d been poking at each other since they’d met, and Merrick had been pushing Alpin away since day one. The only way for Alpin to know what was going on would be to ask, but for the first time in his life, he was terrified to get an answer. Part of him wanted Merrick to say that of course it meant they were together now, but another part knew that wouldn’t happen. He wasn’t sure he was strong enough to face the pain that would come with that.

There was also the fact that Alpin was confused as hell. He shouldn’t want a relationship. He’d never wanted one, not even with the cutest guys he’d had sex with. Why was Merrick different?

In the beginning, Alpin believed that the only thing that made Merrick different was that he was a hybrid. He was a dragon shifter, yet he was also a vampire, and it was fascinating. Alpin wanted to find out more about him and what made him tick, and the fact that he was handsome and sexy only made him better. Now that he’d gotten to know Merrick, Alpin knew there was so much more to him than that. He was the entire package, something Alpin hadn’t expected.

Merrick was a complicated man, like most people. He had likes and dislikes, and even though he’d never admit it, right now, he was at a vulnerable point in his life. He’d lost his home and his livelihood, and Alpin couldn’t help but feel he was taking advantage. He’d forced himself on Merrick for this trip, so maybe he’d done the same last night. Merrick seemed eager to get Alpin in bed, but maybe Alpin had just seen what he wanted.

Once again, the only way to ensure what was happening would be to ask. When had words become so hard? And what did Alpin want?

Could he want a relationship?

He bit his lower lip and peeked at Merrick, who was focused on the road. His hands were wrapped around the steering wheel, and looking at them reminded Alpin of last night. Those hands had been on his body. They’d been on his skin, gentle yet strong, giving him pleasure and making him feel cherished.
