CHAPTER 9

SIDNEY

She tell me that it’s mine, I tell her stop lyin’ mine and who else, she say worry ‘bout yourself. – Lil Wayne

Meech was eating his breakfast while I was replying to a good morning text from Reem. He had texted me since five this morning and I was just now replying at ten. I slept in later than usual because Meech didn’t hop up hollering about being late. He acted like he worked a regular job where he had to clock in. Meech worked for his uncle, and I highly doubted Rafi was up at this time clocking when his nephew came over. He ate his oatmeal – his request - while I continued to text Reem back. He wanted to see me today and I wanted to see him too. We hadn’t met up since I had been back from Miami. Even though we hadn’t physically seen one another, we both made time to facetime, text or call when we were thinking of each other. It was so weird because Reem made me excited about life again. I got butterflies when I thought about him and got excited for our next interaction.

“What you doing today?” Meech finally broke his morning silence. He hadn’t said a word other than wanting oatmeal since his feet touch the floors this morning.

“I think I’m going to take myself out to lunch and do some shopping.”

He stared at me for a bit before he replied. “Shopping, huh?”

“I did mention going to lunch too.”

“Since when you go out to lunch alone?”

I shrugged. “There’s a lot of things that I want to start doing. You’re gone all day, so why not start doing things alone.”

“Fuck is that supposed to mean, Sid?”

“Nothing Meech,” I muttered. “What are you doing today?”

“Got a lot of running around to do before we head out the country.”

The last thing I wanted to do was go to Antigua with Meech. It was my love for Rafi that was forcing me to go. If he wanted me there, then I was going to attend. Me and Meech was in a weird place, and I enjoyed the less time that we did spend together. Everything I said bothered him. He acted like what I said had a deeper meaning. More than anything, Meech seemed stressed out.

“I thought Mooski was supposed to be helping you out? You seem more stressed than before.”

“That nigga be acting like a bitch. Always complaining about not having time for Ju and to live his own life.”

“Babe, that’s fair though. Rafi has you both running around like crazy.”

“That’s because we’re supposed to take this shit over one day. If he’s complaining now, what’s going to happen when he’s given more responsibility? At his age I was running shit with Rafi and proving myself.”

“Maybe he doesn’t want the same life that you do. Mooski does a lot of things because of his loyalty to you and Rafi.”

This life wasn’t for Mooski and Meech knew it. The only reason Mooski did half the shit he did was because he was loyal to his family.
