MAMA VEE

I could smell trouble over this crab stuffed salmon that was plated beautifully in front of me. Yves sat across from me with not a lick of makeup on her face and was just as radiant as a model on the page of Vogue. You knew you were beautiful when you didn’t have to try and still shut shit down. She wore a tattered Harvard T-shirt with a pair of legs and fuzzy socks – she sure settled in quickly. I hadn’t formed my opinion on her because she was quiet. Imagine my surprise when I came in to get the kids ready, and they were already at the kitchen counter eating breakfast. Even KK had been fed and was sleeping peacefully in her outfit for the day.

Like this meal – Yves had made it. While Roddy and RJ were scrapping their plate, me and Juleena were looking around the table with questions. Juleena was a lot like me in that way. She was curious and nosey. Jia wasn’t anywhere in sight. Come to mention it; she hadn’t been around much lately. We either missed each other, or she just wasn’t here. Tonight, I came over to talk about this new arrangement and to find out how I fit into this routine. Low and behold, it was only Roddy here with the kids. I found him in his office while Yves cooked dinner and set the table without any help.

“The food nasty?” Yves bluntly questioned me. She stared me right in the eyes. I could tell she was trying to read me.

“Girl, I haven’t even had a chance to take a bite,” I snapped back.

“Just making sure. I can cook, so I know it’s not nasty,” she shot back and got up to clear her plate. “I made chocolate cake too. I’m going to feed Kingsley and get her down for bed,” she shot over her shoulder.

“Ight.” Roddy said while shoving the pile of rice into his mouth.

“Boy, stop acting like I don’t come over here and feed y’all.”

“Once a week ain’t enough, Mama Vee,” RJ spoke while spitting food out his mouth. “This tastes like she works in a restaurant or something. Ju, why you not eating?”

“Daddy, I don’t like her,” Juleena announced. “She’s just so…ugh.”

“What in the hell does that even mean, Juleena?” I questioned her. Juleena was naturally judgmental and didn’t hide it. Poor baby took after her aunt, but it was tolerated because I was younger. Her being so damn young and judgmental would get her a lot of ass whippings from other girls.

“First, she’s super dry in the morning, and then she listens to gospel music.”

“In her defense, KK never screams like she does when Jia drives her. The demon spawn must like the lord’s music.” RJ busted out in a laughing fit – being the only one finding his joke funny.

“Don’t call my daughter a demon spawn,” Roddy scolded him and turned his attention to Juleena. “Why you complaining about dumb shit, Ju?”

“Daddy, I don’t want her here.
