When I saw Sidney’s name pop across my screen I nearly tossed Tanya across the room trying to answer it. I didn’t think she would ever call, and the fact that she did restored my faith in humanity. Tanya was asleep when I tossed her up off me and I knew I was going to hear her mouth. I closed the bedroom door behind me and headed toward her back porch with the phone in my hand.

“Hey babe. I was worried about—”

“Save all that bullshit that’s about to come out your mouth.” She shut me down before I could even get the words out of my mouth. “I need to get into the apartment so I can get my things and give you the key back.”

I knew how Sidney thought and knew she would try to get her things when I wasn’t home. Since she wasn’t on the lease, I had the front desk deny anybody that tried to come upstairs. If she wanted her stuff she would have no choice but to talk to me. “I’m handling business right now. You want to come by later tonight?”

I didn’t have shit planned all day, but she didn’t know that. Sidney forced me to wait by my phone until she was ready to talk to me. So she was going to have to operate on my time. “No. I’m busy. I can send Juleena and her brother to pick up the stuff.”

Fuck. She was smarter than I thought. “Let me move some shit around. Come by around one.”

I looked at my phone because she didn’t even bother to reply. My phone made the sound letting me know that she ended the call. I took a deep breath before going back inside to face Tanya. My crib was too quiet, so I had been staying with Tanya. It wasn’t like she minded. She was the one who offered me to come stay a few nights with her so I could attend her doctor’s appointment with her.

“What the fuck was that about? You damn near tossed me across the room trying to get to your phone.” She tied her robe around her waist while waiting for an explanation.

“It was a business call that I was waiting on,” I lied and started to pull on my clothes from yesterday. “I gotta run and handle some shit.”

“We were supposed to go out for brunch and then baby shopping.”

I didn’t understand why she was trying to go baby shopping when we went to the doctor’s appointment and the damn baby wasn’t even a baby. It looked like I was watching a piece of Cheeto float around on the screen. Tanya was all emotional like it was something worth crying about. Now that we had went to the appointment all she spoke about was this damn baby. What the hell were we going shopping for? We didn’t even know what the fuck the baby was.
