CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Yesterday was the worst day of my life. Please let today be a better day, Ici said to herself as she pushed the comforter off of her body. The next morning had come very quickly. She hadn’t gotten much sleep because the situation with her parents was heavily on her mind. She jumped up and threw on some clothes. She didn’t care how she looked. She threw on a pair of loose fitting True Religion Jeans, a white tee, and some Jordan’s. She took her scarf off and pulled her hair up into a messy ponytail. She didn’t bother putting anything on her face other than her Mac lip gloss. Ici looked in the mirror. Her eyes were bloodshot red from her lack of sleep and her long drawn out crying session she had at her pity party last night.
She looked a hot mess, but she didn’t care. Her heart was broken. Her looks weren’t on her list of priorities today. Not only had she broken up with her man, but she had been forbidden to cheer. There was absolutely nothing else that could go wrong. Ici ran down the stairs, grabbed a protein shake, bottled water, and a couple of pieces of fruit and headed to school. Pulling up in front of Azzure’s apartment, Ici laid on the horn. Surprisingly, Azzure was waiting and Ici didn’t have to wait long. She ran to her car and jumped in.
“Yuck, you look like shit!” Azzure told Ici.
“Thanks a bunch.”
“Yuck! Who is this ugly bitch and where is my best friend?” Azzure asked jokingly, but Ici wasn’t in a playing mood.
“Damn, what the fuck is wrong wit’ chu?” Azzure asked.
“Nothing,” Ici replied as she unlocked the doors with her keyless remote. They got into the car. Ici started the car and turned on the air condition.
“Yasssssss,” Azzure said soaking up the cold air blowing through the vents.
Ici laughed as she pulled out of the parking lot and into the Thacker Avenue traffic. The majority of the ride was silent as the girls jammed to the local radio station. Azzure decided to break the ice before getting to school.
“What’s really good with you?” she asked.
“Just some stuff on my mind. That’s all. No biggie,” Ici replied.
“Like what? I’m your best friend. You tell me everything. What’s up?”
Ici huffed.
“What’s up, sis?” Azzure asked.
“Nothing.”
“What the hell is wrong with you, damn it?” Azzure knew her best friend like a book and she could tell that something was wrong with her despite her insistence that she was fine.
Ici sighed. She didn’t want to talk about it. Ici felt if she talked about it, it would be like reliving her pain. She hadn’t gotten a wink of sleep last night, and she was entirely too tired to have this conversation with Azzure. Just thinking about the situation was draining, but she knew that Azzure would never just let the situation go. “My dad said I couldn’t cheer anymore,” she confessed.
“What?” Azzure yelled in disbelief. “Why?”
“Mrs. Cooper came to my house because I didn’t practice yesterday.
