Mennonite Brethren Churches, Canadian Conference of

With about 37,000 members, this is the largest body of MENNONITES in CANADA. Established in 1860, the Mennonite Brethren trace their roots to a renewal movement in Russian Mennonite communities under way in the late 1850s. The earliest Canadian congregations originated through evangelistic work among Old Colony communities in the 1880s as well as from secondary migrations from the United States in the 1890s and later, and from RUSSIA beginning in the 1920s. The Northern District (which included all Canadian congregations) was established in 1909. The name Canadian Conference was adopted in 1946.

With some 250 congregations in eight provinces, members worship in more than a dozen different languages. The beliefs of this group appear in a 2004 confession of faith. The denomination operates numerous mission and education programs and also cooperates in many areas with the United States Conference of Mennonite Brethren. The Canadian Conference supports MENNONITE CENTRAL COMMITTEE projects as well as other inter-Mennonite organizations including MENNONITE WORLD CONFERENCE. Mennonite Brethren Mission and Service International is the global mission agency of the Mennonite Brethren churches in Canada and the United States. It works in about a dozen countries including Mexico and Panama.
