Charlie’s eyes widened, and he leaned over the table, his voice loud enough that Dorran could hear him over the noise in the bar. “How much are the coins worth?”

Dorran shrugged. “I don’t know for sure, but it’s a lot. I’d say about a million, maybe? Eli didn’t even let me see all of them, but I noticed a capped bust half-dollar.”

Charlie wrinkled his nose. “You do know I have no idea what that is, right?”

“It’s a coin. Can be worth more than half a million.”

Charlie stuffed a fry into his mouth. “So you think John really killed Francis? For the coins?”

“I don’t know.”

“But you think that’s what happened?”

“Maybe? I mean, what would have been the odds of Francis taking the wrong insulin dosage when he’d been diabetic for decades? He knew what he was doing and how dangerous not being careful could be. I didn’t know him, but would you have let yourself be distracted while doing something like that?”

“Probably not. But who killed John?”

Dorran sighed. “No idea. It could be anyone. Everyone seems to hate him.”

“And Eli won’t tell you anything about the case?”

“No.”

Charlie leaned back in his chair. “Why not?”

“He says it’s none of my business, and he’s right. I don’t have anything to do with it.”

“That’s not exactly true. You found John’s body. You live in Francis’ apartment. With his ghost. I mean, if you don’t have anything to do with the case, I don’t know who does.”

“I’m not a cop, Charlie. And Eli still doesn’t like me much.”

“You said he stayed to help you clean up after the break-in, and that he was there before you even got to your apartment. That means he wanted to see you.”

“Probably to ask me if I’d found anything interesting in Francis’ stuff.”

“You did. But come on. There has to be more to it. I think he likes you.”

Dorran snorted even as his heart stuttered at the thought. “He has a weird way of showing it.”

“Oh, come on. Don’t play coy. He came to see you at your apartment and protected you when you realized someone had broken in. He helped you clean up even though he didn’t have to. He likes you, Dorran.”

“He’s also been snapping at me ever since we saw each other again.”

“Because you get under his skin. Because he wants you.”

Dorran was surprised at how much he wanted that to be true, but he wasn’t sure. He couldn’t deny Eli had relaxed in his presence, but that didn’t mean they could be—hat? Lovers again? Or maybe only friends? He wasn’t sure what he wanted, let alone what Eli wanted. The short chats they’d had weren’t enough for Dorran to know.

“You still want him, right?” Charlie asked after taking a sip of his beer.

Dorran thought about denying it, but he didn’t. No one knew him better than Charlie. He’d see right through him. “Yeah. Yeah, I do. But I don’t know him, Charlie, not really. Not anymore.”

“But you talked, and he’s out to his parents. That’s what you wanted when you broke up with him.
