5.2.6.2 Self-Cleansing Velocities

Self-cleansing velocity is referred to as that velocity sufficient to prevent deposition of suspended matter. The velocity needed to carry sediment in a pipe flowing full is given by the following equation:

vsc is the self-cleansing velocity, m/s

rH is the hydraulic radius, m

b′ is the dimensionless constant (sediment-scouring characteristics, see Table 5.3)

s.g. is the specific gravity, dimensionless

d is the diameter of sediment grain, m

n is the roughness factor (Manning and Kutter factor), m1/6

f is the friction (Darcy–Weisbach) factor, dimensionless (usually 0.02–0.03) (McGhee and Steel 1991)
