FIGURE 6.1 “Varying intensities of activity over the course of a 24-hour cycle”—the first appearance of actigraphy, Szymanski’s Aktograph (Szymanski 1920, 139, Figure 5). Szymanski devised a range of seismograph-like apparatuses to measure the activity-rest rhythms of different animals, including human children. The plots in this figure were generated, inter alia, by a canary, mice and a worm. Szymanski’s observation that many animals experienced multiple activity-rest cycles in a single 24-hour day led him to coin the term polyphasic.
