7.2 Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)

ICP-MS is an analytical tool that is very useful for the detection of metals and non-metals concentration in the solution below parts per billion. This technique separates the sample into its basic atoms or ions with the use of an argon plasma source. Then the discharged of ions from the plasma occurred and traveled into the mass spectrometer, where ions are isolated according to their atomic mass-to-charge ratio by the analyzer. In this technique, samples are used in their gaseous or aerosol form in order to introduce to the plasma torch. Hence, the liquid sample is excited from a flask through a pump and the numerous ions formed, linked with very small backgrounds and finally, it produces concentration for the maximum of elements in good detection limits (Brown and Milton 2005).
