Oliviaâs presentation, as she had expected, garnered a range of reactions. The room was now silent, and a heavy atmosphere had descended. She had noted shakes of the head and had heard mutterings as she revealed the plans for the renovations. She had insisted and reiterated over and over that the character of the castle would not change or be spoiled. She wasnât about to put in UPVC double glazing, for goodnessâ sake. But if the castle was to make money, she had to do something to help matters along. Her father had always said, âYou canât do the same as youâve always done and expect to get different results. You have to break a few eggs to make an omelette.â Well, her omelette currently resembled something that had been dropped on the floor and stepped on, and fear had set in. Was she about to lose her entire existing staff?
Alasdair McKendrick, the family lawyer, cleared his throat and stood, smoothing down his tie as he addressed the gathered group. âSo, the upshot is, the funding and permissions are in place and work can begin immediately to get the castle ready for public opening.â He turned and smiled at her. âAnd Iâm sure Iâm not the only one who agrees you have made the right decision, Lady Olivia.â He then glanced around the room with raised eyebrows, clearly hoping for some agreement from his peers.
Uncle Innes spoke first. âOlivia dear, you know you have my full support. Iâm aware that your father never wanted his home to become a zoo, and the things in it â exhibits. But he didnât live to see it heading towards disaster and Iâm sure if he had, he would have come to the same decision as you have.â He looked around the room, addressing the whole gathered audience. âIâm sure you all understand that if Lady Olivia doesnât do something drastic, the place will fall to rack and ruin, which is worse than any idea our dear lady has presented today.â
A mumble of agreement traversed the room and Innes turned back to face Olivia. âIâm sure your mother would have taken the same route had she lived and maybe been younger, and as brave as you. She was a wonderful woman who cared about this old place. It was in her blood, that much was true. And she put her trust firmly in you, so who are we to argue?â He smiled warmly and relief flooded her veins. The fond mention of her mother had caused her eyes to sting.
âThank you, Uncle Innes. That means the world to me.â
Alasdair stepped forward. âI think Lady Olivia deserves a thank you for trying her best to save this castle, not only for the future generations but for every single person employed here now and those who will no doubt be employed in the near future to see these plans come to fruition. Donât you all agree?â He began to clap and one by one every person in the room began to applaud too until everyone was on their feet.
