Chapter Nine

Kade, Bridget and Cody were midway to California. They’d already changed planes in Denver, and now they were on the last leg of their flight.

Kade glanced over at Bridget to see how she was faring. She seemed calm enough. She even smiled at him.

“So do you like flying?” he asked.

“It’s getting easier. Except for the takeoffs and landings. Those still make me a little nervous. But otherwise, I can’t even tell that we’re moving.”

So far there hadn’t been any turbulence, so they hadn’t gotten bumped around. “Cody is enjoying it.”

“No kidding. Look at him.”

They both glanced over at their son. With earbuds planted firmly in his ears, he was munching on pretzels, drinking orange juice and watching a TV show he’d selected. Their newly refurbished plane was equipped with in-flight entertainment, located in seatback screens in front of each first-class passenger.

“Do you know what he told me earlier?” Bridget asked. “That when he grows up, he wants be a pilot.”

“Did he just decide that today?”

She nodded. “I always envisioned him running the farm equipment business someday. Not that it’s up to me to decide. But it’s just what everyone in my family has done.”

“The pilot thing will probably pass. Kids always change their minds about what they want to do.”

“I know. But it’s strange to see him becoming so cosmopolitan.”

Kade chuckled. “Is that what he’s doing?”

“That’s how it seems to me.” She laughed a little, too. “Well, maybe not with the way he’s cramming those pretzels into his mouth, but you get the idea.”

“Yeah, I do.” Kade studied her, thinking how pretty she looked, with her hair neatly braided and her Western-style blouse tied at the waist. A country girl on the way to the city. “What did you want to be when you were a kid? Did you ever have any aspirations beyond working for your family’s business?”

“When I was really little I wanted to be a princess. I didn’t have a clue how I was going to do that, though. Other than to marry a prince.”

“That’s what Grace Kelly did.”

“Is she another of your favorite pinup actresses?”

“She wasn’t known for being a pinup, per se, but she was known for her elegance and beauty. I read that she was actually quite wild. But somehow she got past it without her public persona being tarnished. Some reports even say that she tricked her groom into thinking that she was still a virgin when she’d already bedded most of her leading men. I don’t know if there’s any truth to that. Whatever the case, she was considered the ultimate in class and breeding.”

“Then, it makes sense that she married a prince.” Bridget sighed like a schoolgirl. “I’ll bet their wedding was really grand. Like those old clips of Charles and Diana. And William and Kate, of course. I watched every moment of theirs.”

“I didn’t pay much attention to it.” Kade didn’t want to discuss marriage, royal or otherwise. But he did want to undo the plaits in Bridget’s hair and run his fingers through each silky strand.
