There were times that the disciples begged Jesus to increase their faith (Luke 17:5–6). Have you ever done the same? Jesus assured them that if they had faith as small as a mustard seed, they could do great things—and that leads us to another spiritual swing in our thinking as disciples.

Surrendering all that we have from the very beginning is a big move of faith. It’s running toward him with the anticipation that he already knows what’s going on in our hearts and heads, and that he’ll walk through it with us.

We give him our not enough faith.

We give him our not enough direction.

We give him our not enough talent.

We give him our not enough confidence.

We give him our not enough money.

We give him our not enough parenting skills.

We give him our not enough patience.

We give him our not enough [you fill in the blank].

This is where faith expands to include the supernatural. Over and over in Scripture, Jesus asks the disciples to give what they don’t seem to have. It tests their faith, certainly. It shifts their focus from themselves—or their overflowing purses (or lack thereof) and their own natural giftings—to him.

I give you my not enough and trust that you can do immensely more with it than I can imagine. Today my not enough is all the very real details that come with cancer. Hospital bills. Tests. Uncertainty.

I’m afraid, God, ’cause this is my guy. I don’t know why, but it was easier when it was me. I’m holding it all up to you.
