WHILE WALKING BACK to the nursing home, she thought of what Jules said, remembering her friend’s touch when she was comatose. The sensations were disturbing to Finna and even troubled her. But truth be told, it was what brought her senses back from her sleep, and what she now needed to do to Brice.

Gordy had just gotten on duty, and was getting ready to make his rounds. Finna walked to the nurse’s desk and smiled up at him. “How are you today?”

He gave her a warm smile. “I’m doing fine. How’s the Doc, any change today?”

She shook her head sadly. “But I’m not giving up.”

“I’m glad you’re here for him, and if there’s anything I can do to help, just ask.”

“I’m asking now, Gordy.” Finna went on to tell him about her coma and how Jules helped to bring her out of it. “I want to be Brice’s caregiver while I’m here each day. Will you show me how?”

Gordy nodded, gathering hygiene items and placing them on a tray. “Come with me now. He needs changing and his temp taken. You can assist me in that, but I’ll leave the washing and massaging to you.”

Finna followed him into Brice’s room. Gordy went to the foot of the bed and rolled the blanket back, unlacing the boot-like apparatus that kept Brice’s feet upright and the toes from pointing down. “Every day I remove the boots, wash his feet, and rotate the ankles.” He removed one boot, took an antiseptic wipe from the tray, and washed Brice’s foot, taking care to get between each toe.

She moved beside him, removed the other boot, and did the same. Carefully, she watched Gordy do the exercise, rotating the ankle clockwise, than counter-clockwise. Finna worked the foot she was tending the same way and learned how to replace the boot.

Gordy moved to the side of the bed and removed the blanket then unfastened the sticky tabs on the protective wear. “This usually takes two people to do. Doc’s a big man, and his dead weight makes it difficult for just one person to remove the soiled pants, wash him, and redress him; while keeping him rolled to one side. Since he needs to feel your touch, I’ll do the holding, you do the washing.” He pointed to a tube of medication on the tray. “And you also need to apply the ointment on his rash after he’s thoroughly cleaned.” Gordy slipped Brice’s absorbent wear aside.

Finna’s face reddened and she cast her glance away.

Gordy looked over at her. “I do this everyday, Finna, for both the male and female patients. They depend on me to keep them clean and comfortable. If this is awkward for you, then you will not be helping him in the way he needs. To do this right, you must get past your inhibition.”

Finna nodded then inhaled deeply, remembering how Jules had put aside all protocol to help her. Gordy rolled Brice onto his side; she removed the soiled garment, washed him clean with an antiseptic wipe and applied the salve with a trembling hand.
