Going to the gym was a bad idea. No, it was a terrible one. She convinced herself she could distance her growing feeling for Hunter. She’d even learned how to wrap her hands so she didn’t have to touch him. Correction: she taught herself so he wouldn’t have a reason to touch her, because, damn it, his touch set off a million butterflies in her belly.

Their footfalls pounded the sidewalk in unison. Michelle concentrated on her breathing, taking deep breaths in through her nose and blowing out through her mouth. It was one of the first times she didn’t have to worry about her surroundings and safety in public. She transferred that responsibility to Hunter. They ran in comfortable silence until they reached the park.

“You are a runner. You’re not even out of breath.” He laughed as he tried to catch his.

“It’s all in the breathing. You have to practice regulating your breath. It’s about taking long deep breaths of air into your lungs and letting it out slowly.”

“The student teaches the master. How about we walk for a while? I want to show you one of my favorite spots in the city. It’s just up that trail.” He pointed to a narrow path cut through over grown bushes.

“Sure, I don’t have to be at the gallery until eleven.”

Hunter bought them each a bottle of water from a street cart and pointed toward a path.

Michelle scanned the park. She’d never actually stepped foot inside. It had always scared her to enter it alone. There were too many hidden areas. “It’s so beautiful here.”

“If you think this is beautiful, wait until you see what’s around this bend.”

Michelle smiled when she saw a small body of water come into view. She looked at Hunter and furrowed her brow. “The pond?”

“It’s not just any pond. Go see what’s inside,” he said, nodding toward it.

Michelle moved closer to the edge and peered at the surface. A bright flash of color danced in the murky water. “What was that?”

“Fish. Look.” He pointed at another flash of red and orange.

Michelle leaned over the water, bracing her hands above her knees. “Koi fish? How cool. I wonder how they got here.”

Hunter squatted next to her. “Believe it or not, I put them here.”

“You? Why?”

“It’s a funny story. Someone brought two into the bar last year and asked me if they thought they’d survive if they let them go in the Hudson River.”

Michelle laughed. “The river? Seriously?”

Hunter took a swig of water and chuckled. “Ridiculous, right? I took them and set them free here.” He shrugged. “Figured they’d have a better chance in a pond than the river. I’ve been feeding them ever since, and I bring a new one every now and then to keep them happy.” Hunter pulled a piece of bread wrapped in plastic out of his pocket. Tearing the bread apart, he gave half to Michelle. The fish quickly gobbled each piece as it floated on the water’s surface.

“They certainly seem happy,” Michelle said as she threw the rest of her bread into the pond.
