Sadly, the costly marker did nothing to placate the seemingly restless spirit of Clifford Griffin. Over the years, newspapers would recall the tragic ghost story. On August 16, 1959, the Colorado Springs Gazette said:

ENGLISHMAN’S GHOSTLY MUSIC

RECALLED IN SILVER PLUME

Even to this day, the ghost of the mad fiddler can still be heard playing from cliff tops at sundown. The haunting melodies still reverberate through the canyon just as they did long ago. Even more unsettling is that the mournful ghost of the Englishman is still seen on his lofty stage, silhouetted against moonlit skies. They say the tall, slender apparition appears in a dark suit and beaver top hat playing his violin near his massive tombstone. Many theories abound about why the maddened Englishman still haunts his grave and the town below, but there is no doubt that he still does, even after 135 years. The clifftop grave of the phantom fiddler even received a nod in Ripley’s Believe It or Not! For a map to the haunted hot spot, please visit Silver Plume’s George Rowe Museum, open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
