Laurelâs face paled. âWho is the her heâs referring to? You or me?â
Malâs brow furrowed. âAt first, I thought it was you because youâre my closest female friend. The message is in my living room which, to me, means the you heâs referring to is me. But now, Iâm not so sure.â
The sheriff balanced his hands on his hips. âIâm leaning toward both women as the targets. Especially since their homes were vandalized.â Faulkner tipped his head toward Mal and then Laurel. Finally, he met Devinâs gaze. âThink about it⦠Both of their places were broken into, one after the other. The movement of the two photographs at Laurelâs was deliberate. What or who was the common denominator in the two photos?â
Devinâs eyes narrowed. âMe.â One had been a photo of Devinâs family before his parents had passed. It had been moved across the room. The other was of his engagement to Mal. That one had been left facing down.
âNo other women have reported a break-in?â Devin asked the sheriff.
âNo,â Faulkner answered. âAgainâ¦â
Devin nodded. âIâm the common denominator.â
âMal and I are women you love and care about,â Laurel said softly. âThis feels like someone is targeting us to get to you.â
Devin swore and limped the length of the porch and back. âWho has it in for me? Iâve been in Maryland recovering from wounds. Why not get to me then?â
âYou were probably surrounded by medical staff or other patients,â Laurel said. âThey donât like to leave you alone while youâre recovering both physically and mentally.â
Devin nodded. A flash of light out of the corner of his eye caught his attention. More headlights appeared on the road leading from the gate to the ranch house.
The sheriffâs eyes narrowed. âExpecting company?â His hand went to the gun on his hip.
âNo.â Devin touched Malâs arm. âYou and Laurel might want to wait inside the house.â
âNo way.â Mal stood with her feet braced and her arms crossed over her chest.
Laurel stood beside Mal, her chin held high. âNot without you, Devin.â
Devin winced. The last thing he wanted was to feel like he couldnât protect himself or the women he loved.
âWeâre not weak women who need a man to protect us 24/7,â Laurel said. âWe might not have equal physical strength, but weâre smart and capable of having each otherâs backs.â
Mal nodded with a quick smile. âWhat your sister said.â
The headlights flashed brightly in their eyes as the vehicle slowed and rolled to a stop in front of the house. When the headlights blinked off, Devin could see a dark truck. The doors opened. The interior lights shined down on the two men inside.
Devin let out the breath heâd been holding. âItâs okay. Itâs Jake Cogburn and Max Thornton from the Brotherhood Protectors.â
Thorn grabbed a bag from the backseat and followed Jake to the porch, where they joined Devin, the sheriff, Mal and Laurel.
Jake shook hands with the sheriff and then turned to Devin. âWe heard the police scanner mention thereâd been a break-in at Mal Wattsâs place.
